Aderopo Afolabi is a Nigerian visual artist whose practice explores African identity, fashion cultures, and representation. My work highlights African textiles, particularly Ankara, while addressing broader questions of race, modest fashion, and appearance-based discrimination.

My ability to create visuals stems from the talent I have in photography, which is supported by my recently acquired education, an MA in Photography.

My image was selected as a Portrait of Britain award winner in January 2023 from my Artistic series about Black Women and Afrocentric Fashion, and my image was further selected to be on the front cover of Portrait of Britain Vol 5 Book, which is published by Hoxton Mini Press and displayed nationwide across the United Kingdom as part of the Portrait of Britain exhibition.

My work has also been recognised internationally through a shortlisting for the Royal Photographic Society's International Photography Exhibition (IPE 164), selection for the Sony World Photography Awards Editor's Weekly Selection for my project exploring representation and visibility among women with albinism and a Nationwide publication titled "Nigerian artist, Aderopo, uses photography to challenge stereotypes". In addition, my Hijabi Women in Fashion project was exhibited at ALARA Lagos, where it contributed to conversations surrounding modest fashion, identity, inclusion, and representation.

Across my projects, I use photography as a tool for cultural documentation and visual storytelling. My work seeks to amplify underrepresented voices, challenge stereotypes, and create meaningful conversations around identity, diversity, and belonging. Through my exploration of African fashion, modest fashion, and communities that are often overlooked or misrepresented, I aim to build connections between cultures while contributing to broader discussions about representation in contemporary visual culture.
